Mobile gambling revenues to hit $16bn within four years

2007-03-08 16:16:47

Bets placed via mobile phones will amount to $16 billion dollars a year by 2011, it has been claimed.

A study by Juniper Research has said that despite an initial slowdown in growth provoked by draconian US gambling laws, a sharp increase in mobile gaming revenue is still expected.

Leading software developers have already begun to investigate the technology. Earlier this year CryptoLogic announced details of a provisional agreement with Asian firm Brilliance Technology, which will provide games on mobile devices in China.

"There is a lot of emphasis in developing core business in potentially lucrative Asian markets. However we are still convinced that mobile's time will come," said Bruce Gibson, author of the report from Juniper Research.

"The case for gambling using mobile data services remains compelling and the Asian market will be in the forefront," he added.

Estimates put the Asian mobile gambling market at $6.7 billion by 2011, more than ten times last year's figure of $647 million.
