A survey investigating seniors' attitudes to gambling has concluded that the pastime is a useful and popular activity among older citizens.
Conducted by professor Joan Norris and Wilfrid Laurier University and Joseph Tindale of the University of Guelph, found that just 20 per cent of respondents &ndash 2,000 Ontario residents aged over 55, with most aged over 70 &ndash said they never gambled.
The results of the study found that gambling was one of the ten most popular hobbies among seniors, according to the Waterloo Chronicle.
"Our results show that gambling is not a problem for the ageing population; rather, it is one of many activities undertaken by seniors," said Ms Norris, the newspaper has reported.
"Those who participate in many activities are more likely to gamble, and those who gamble do so for the enjoyment, to win, and to socialize with others," she added.
The report authors' next survey will investigate gambling among adults over the age of 45 who live in towns and cities.
An eCogra survey published earlier this year found that the average online casino player was older than first thought, with 46 to 55-year-olds the most likely to log on and play.
