Rutgers University in New Jersey is to launch a new Center for Gambling Studies as part of an investigation into the online and offline betting success story.
The university claims the center will be one of the most comprehensive study centers for monitoring gambling activity anywhere in the world.
Gambling has traditionally been highly popular in New Jersey, with Atlantic City long famed for its casinos and gambling activities. Officials now wish to embark upon a closer investigation of one of the state's favourite pastimes.
"Gambling has been very understudied at the university level, partly because it is interdisciplinary. It touches on so many areas," said Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling.
"Gambling is here to stay," Nower said. "People have done it forever, and they'll continue to do it. Our task is to make sure we maximize the entertainment value and economic benefits, while minimizing the potential harm to those who don't know when to stop," added gambling expert Lia Nower, who will become the director of the center once it opens.
