Macau clarifies online gaming proposals

2007-02-27 16:40:35

Gaming officials in Macau, which now rivals Las Vegas as the biggest gambling mecca in the world, have outlined initial proposals regarding the regulation of online betting in the region.

The Macau Gaming Commission has said that it may be open to changes in the laws in order to facilitate online gambling in Macau, but added that it was ultimately up to the government to act on such proposals.

"We have everything set up, we are building the framework and we take the view that that we should take a bold step forward - interactive gaming is there already," said legal advisor to the commission Carlos Lobo.

Other officials added that they would ensure there remains a strong emphasis on player security throughout the venture.

"We are aware that online operators frequently exchange customers - but we have a lot of spotlights on us and we don't want to place unfair burdens on operators. At the same time though we don't want a situation where online licenses become a burden on the government," said commissioner for gaming Jorge Oliveira.
