South African online gambling case set for hearing

2007-02-19 16:05:10

A dispute centring on a Swaziland online casino has been granted permission to pursue a civil case in the Supreme Court of Appeals in Bloemfontein, South Africa, over the legality of its operations.

The casino was forced to file an amended appeal application following a judge's ruling that the online gambling site had not disclosed a reason for approaching him in the first place.

Current South African gambling regulations could be set to change once government advisors debate legislation, though such moves would not affect the current case, which centres on whether or not the casino is exempt from anti-gambling legislation due to its servers residing outside of South Africa.

"The legal ambiguity about online gambling continues and online gamblers and online gambling advertisers have a further reprieve from prosecution," said a Gauteng official, Online-Casinos.com reported.

Last week it was reported that casino style terminals in bingo halls were proving highly popular with South African gamblers eager to exploit a loophole in the law.
