The Canadian province of Alberta is to survey residents in order to discover their views on online gambling, it has been revealed.
Polls conducted both over the telephone and online will seek the opinion of around 1,000 residents.
However, with speculation mounting that the study could come as a precursor to more liberal gambling laws, an Alberta Gaming spokeswoman moved to deny the rumours.
Marilyn Carlyle-Helms had earlier commented that the survey was aimed at "getting a bit of insight into what Albertans are doing now. Are they playing [online]? And what types of games are they playing?"
Ms Carlyle-Helms later clarified that there were no plans to change current legislation, which permits online gambling in cases where the province oversees events.
Nonetheless, the spokeswoman did acknowledge the power of the "global phenomenon" that was online gambling.
