Hunt on for casino site

2007-02-06 12:59:51

The native American Mashpee Wampanoags tribe from Cape Cod are searching for a new casino site.

They plan to move away from their current locations in southern Massachusetts, reported the Boston Herald.

Tribal leaders want to branch out to a new location, but they will choose a location where the local residents would welcome the development.

In July of this year, the Mashpee Wampanoags are due to be given federal recognition for their continued self-government since the 17th century.

Tribal spokesman Scott Ferson told the Boston Herald that the tribe plans to buy some land for the use of the tribe, and may build a casino in the area.

Mr Ferson continued: "As it takes land into trust, the tribe will be thinking about the possibility of a destination casino depending, on where the state is in allowing".

The tribe held a meeting to look into land trust issues on 14th January, but no discussion took place, due to pending litigation.
