The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act could be challenged by the European Union as part of the latest attack on the prohibitive regulations, it has been revealed.
The EU's internal market commissioner said that such practices may have affected EU companies and could be examined in more detail.
"In my view it is probably a restrictive practice and we might take it up in another fora," said Charlie McCreevy, speaking to the European Parliament.
Despite his belief that the legislation was a case of protectionism, Mr McCreevy suggested that countering the plans may take time.
"There have been no face-to-face talks about the issue with Peter Mandelson, the EU trade commissioner," he added.
However, Mr McCreevy did say that the World Trade Organisation (WTO) may yet have a further role to play in the matter.
Earlier this week the WTO affirmed its anti-UIGEA stance following a complaint by Antigua, originally based on rules in place before the UIGEA had been written into law.
