The eCogra survey, published this week and attracting attention from numerous media sources, has provided new insights into gamblers' behaviour when playing online.
The study shows that the vast majority of players &ndash almost 90 per cent &ndash play at home in the evening, a fact which may seem at odds with recent research demonstrating that numerous UK employees have admitted gambling online while at work.
Aspects of online venues that were attractive to respondents included message boards and forums, with users saying they used such facilities to read about site promotions (65 per cent), site information (53 per cent) and industry news (37 per cent).
The emphasis on promotions was not surprising, given that the on-site bonuses were the single most important reason cited for choosing a specific casino by 75 per cent of those questioned. Game variety, depositing issues and prompt payouts were also rated as important factors.
Half of all players play either one or two poker tables at a time, the report noted, as well as advising that four or more tables or over ten per cent of bankroll usage was an inefficient and counterproductive way of playing.
"The importance of this research for our understanding of the online gambling phenomenon cannot be overstated," said Professor Leighton Vaughan Williams of Nottingham Trent University, who carried out the survey.
