The increasingly popular online world, Second Life, is experiencing its own boom in gambling as the much-hyped virtual universe continues to mimic real life, it has been reported.
An article on the Techdirt website reveals that the online community has witnessed a big increase in gambling on its network as users seek to find ways around the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), or simply indulge in their favourite pastime.
"It's one of the more popular activities there," the article author noted.
The Second Life world has its own currency and is increasingly being noticed by offline companies. Late last year news agency Reuters announced that it was to set up a bureau within the game, while television network CBS has also been involved in the virtual world.
Gambling facilities within the game, with its authentic currency system, mean that it is possible to effectively wager with real money, experts advise.
