A state-wide system in New Mexico that provides support for state education via online and offline gambling receipts is set to continue, it has been announced.
The lottery in New Mexico is in search of a new online vendor following the expiration of the existing ten-year contract.
With the Associated Press reporting that 8.5 per cent of lottery ticket sales come from online games played within the state, the new contract is likely to attract a number of companies eager to cash in on the growth in online gambling.
Currently 24 per cent of all ticket sales go towards scholarships at educational sites around the state, though think tanks have suggested that this be increased to 30 per cent.
But with over $233 million being contributed to the Lottery Success Scholarship scheme, and a further $70 million going towards education as a whole, the initiative has already been a success.
The new contract will begin in November 2008 and will provide for further educational benefits across the state. Over 43,000 students have benefited from the scheme since 1996, which relates to education in public colleges, technical colleges and universities in New Mexico.
