Officials push to re-open Speaking Rock Casino

2006-11-28 14:50:25

City and state officials are backing a resolution which supports the re-opening of a tribal casino in El Paso, Texas, it has been revealed.

Legislation originally filed by state representative Norman Chavez has been adopted by El Paso's city council, meaning that efforts by Tigua Indians to re-start their Speaking Rock casino now have official backing.

Speaking Rock was one of the biggest casinos in the region for the nine years following its opening in 1993, when gambling returned to Texas for the first time since the beginning of the 20th century. But a reversal of the laws in 2002 forced the venue to shut its doors.

However, it seems that the tide has once again turned in favour of the Tiguas, with political figures now on their side.

"El Paso will benefit greatly from [the Tiguas] re-opening their gaming operations. By the job creations, by all the growth that will occur and I think it's just a great opportunity for El Paso," said city representative Eddie Holguin, speaking to ABC-7.
