Richmond supports tribal casino

2006-11-24 16:03:10

A scheme which could bring about the opening of a new Pomo Indian casino in North Richmond, California has been approved by a local council.

Richmond City Council has agreed to a $335 million deal which would run over 20 years, and is based on the exchange of services between the council and the Pomo Indian tribe.

Under the terms of the deal, Richmond will provide public safety and infrastructure aid to the tribe despite the fact that the proposed casino will fall outside of Richmond jurisdiction.

Supporters of the deal hailed it as a means to providing jobs and revenue for lower-income areas of the Richmond region.

"We will bring jobs and good wages. You will see that we will provide organized training programs prior to the hiring process," said tribe chairman Donald Arnold.

However, a recent study into the tribe's history has claimed that its homeland in fact lies some 90 miles away from Richmond, putting the proposed plans in doubt.
