VIP opening for Alberta resort

2006-11-22 15:07:55

A new casino and hotel complex in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada officially opened on Friday, with a further gala set to take place at the end of this week.

The Century Casino and Hotel uses 35,000 square feet of gaming attractions, and features almost 600 slot machines and 31 gaming tables, with plans for further expansion already underway.

With the opening night aimed to demonstrate the benefits of casinos to local communities, a charity event was held in aid of Edmonton Food Bank non-profit organisation. Guests then enjoyed shows and exotic Chinese dancing.

The weekend beginning Friday November 24th will see the casino open to the public for the first time, with live music, prize draws and free food and drink on offer.

Casino operator Century Casinos said it plans to expand its holdings further in the coming months by investing in potentially-lucrative foreign markets.

"We are very pleased with the successful opening and the results of the first weekend of operations and are looking forward to our next big event, the grand opening of our new casino facility for the Century Casino Newcastle, formerly Monte Vista Casino and Conference Centre, in Newcastle, South Africa, on December 2nd, 2006," said a joint statement from co-CEOs Erwin Haitzmann and Peter Hoetzinger.

The increase in foreign investments comes as casino companies seek to find alternate sources of revenue by capitalising on the ever-increasing number of online gamblers who play from across the other side of the world via the comfort of their own homes.
