The head of US gambling giant MGM Mirage has said that online gambling still has a future despite the recently passed Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), it has been reported.
Speaking at the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas, MGM Mirage chief executive Terri Lanni said that changes in the US's electoral make-up provided hope to the online industry.
Mr Lanni was highly critical of the UIGEA, saying that it "makes no sense whatsoever".
"The Republican Party pandered to the religious right," Mr Lanni continued.
The UIGEA was widely criticised not only for its content but also for the way in which it was perceived to be hurried through Congress without due consideration.
Mr Lanni also said that MGM would back any proposed move by the American Gaming Association to request that a study be commissioned examining both sides of the online gaming coin, with an emphasis on regulation rather than prohibition.
The Global Gaming Expo is the largest conference of its kind in the world, featuring over 750 exhibitors and more than 100 conferences over its four day running period.
