Iowa casino gaming on the up

2006-11-15 15:04:15

Casinos in Council Bluffs, Iowa, have become so successful that they now account for 36 per cent of the state's gaming revenue, it has been announced.

Horseshoe Casino was the main source of this figure, single-handedly taking in $16.6 million of the $38.8 million regional figure taken during October.

The Horseshoe was redesigned last year in an $84 million project to improve what was then the ageing Bluffs Run Casino.

As a whole, Iowa collected $106.5 million from almost two million customers during the month, with nearly 700,000 of those gamblers attending casinos in Council Bluffs.

Other popular venues in the area included the Ameristar Casino, which took $14.4 million, and Harrah's Casino and Hotel, which collected $7.8 million.

This week it was also revealed that voters in the state had supported plans to build a riverboat casino in Tama County. The proposed casino revenues included $9.5 million being provided to the state each year, and $1.5 million going to local charitable causes.
