Plans to make Pennsylvania one of the most lucrative slot machine states in the country have been leapt upon by eager investors, with no less than 13 different organisations competing for the five licenses.
The first proposals to be heard will be for two licenses for Philadelphia, with big casino names such as Pinnacle Entertainment and Donald Trump queuing up for their chance to set up shop in what will become the largest city in the country to have a casino.
With so much at stake, many potential investors have been planning and revising their proposals for months, the Associated Press reports.
Groups have had to face resistance from local organisations as well as logistical issues such as traffic flow and economic impact.
Last week saw the opening of the state's first legal slot machines at the temporary casino in Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. The impermanent structure is the first of what is thought could be as many as 14 casinos to be set up in Pennsylvania, which only legalised slot machines two years ago.
