Costner casino ruling overturned

2006-11-10 15:00:00

The South Dakota supreme court has unanimously ruled in favor of Hollywood star Kevin Costner's Deadwood casino, which was under threat of closure via a previous legal ruling.

Mr Costner had been ordered to either sell the casino or buy it for $6.2 million dollars following the dissolution of the actor's business partnership.

Having fired Francis and Carla Caneva, who had managed Deadwood for almost ten years, a dispute arose when the couple, who own a small share in the casino, demanded that Mr Costner sell so they could cash in their stake.

However, the Waterworld star refused, and the supreme court decision appears to vindicate his stance.

The court ruled that Mr Costner must remunerate the couple for their share, but that no sale or enforced closure was necessary.

Deadwood is named after the saloon in the film that made Mr Costner famous, Silverado. Sections of the casino are named after characters from the film.
