US experiences gambling boom

2006-11-06 14:36:02

Increasing revenue and a continual increase in levels of casino expansion mean that the US is in the middle of a significant period of gaming growth, a new report suggests.

The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling says that casinos are now legalized in over 28 states, with almost 100 dockside and riverboat establishments having sprung up across the country.

Total US gambling revenue, until recently buoyed by strong internet receipts, reached $84.7 billion in 2005, representing an increase of $29.6 billion on figures from 1995.

The American Gaming Association also reports on the financial benefits provided to local communities, with over $12 billion in wages paid out by casinos in 2005. In addition to this, the 11 states currently hosting commercial casinos found their tax revenues boosted by a total of almost $5 billion in 2005 - a figure that represents a 4.9 per cent increase on 2004 revenues.

Nevada, the first state to legalize gambling in 1931 and home of the lucrative Las Vegas Strip, received almost $1 billion from local and state government tax revenues in 2005.
