Third South Carolina casino boat proposed

2006-10-27 17:40:00

Horry County, South Carolina, could be in line to receive its third casino boat if a Florida-born investor gets his way.

David Hunt of Sea-Quest Cruises has approached county officials about his idea following an initial meeting last month.

But with two casino boats already in the county, confusion has arisen over Mr Hunt's desire to build a third.

Liz Gilland, chairwoman of the county council in Horry County, claimed that Mr Hunt's interest was "bogus", suggesting that fellow councillor Harold Worley had made up his account of a meeting with Mr Hunt.

Mr Worley insisted that the consultation had taken place, with John Weaver also present.

The news comes at the end of a controversial month for South Carolina's casino boats, with several regulatory efforts failing to agree on a tax for the boats' proceeds. The council similarly failed to reach an agreement over the casinos' proposal that they instead pay local government a boarding fee for every passenger that enters the premises.

Ms Gilland and Mr Worley are on opposite sides of the debate, with the former advocating a boarding fee and the latter pushing for the proceeds tax.
