A new resort in French Lick, Indiana is set to be completed, heralding the long-awaited return of casino gaming to the valley.
The area was once well known for its luxury resorts and gambling facilities, but has now gone casino-less for six years. But a $382 million project is about to change all that.
The French Lick Springs Resort is being restored as part of the money spinning scheme, bringing with it a much needed boost to the struggling local economy.
But the biggest attraction is undoubtedly the 84,000 square foot casino, which stands alongside the hotel. More accurately, it floats &ndash Indiana gambling laws require all casinos to be on water, resulting in the boat like design and artificial lake that characterise the new resort.
It is hoped that the new development will help attract the stars back to the town, with songwriter Irving Berlin and boxer Joe Louis known to visit French Lick's casinos in the early 20th century. But one visitor the resort will be glad to see the back of is gangster Al Capone, who frequently spent time in the old establishments.
