Internet gamblers tend to be educated men who are wealthy and under 40 years of age, according to new research.
A study for the American Gaming Association's (AGA) 2006 State of the States conducted by Peter D Hart Research Associates looked into the demographics of the online gambling industry.
It discovered the typical person who gambles online to be a college-educated, affluent male under the age of 40.
Frank Fahrenkopf Jr, AGA CEO, said: "We strive to make each year's State of the States report the most comprehensive information resource not only on the current state of our industry, but the most significant emerging trends in gaming, so it was important that we take a look at this [internet gambling] growing phenomenon."
The research also found the majority of internet gamblers (70 per cent) took up the activity in the last two years, which demonstrates the huge growth in the market.
